French downhill skier David Poisson dies during training

Nov. 13 (UPI) — French Olympic downhill skier David Poisson died Monday during a training accident at a Canadian resort, the French skiing federation said. He was 35.

He was training

for the upcoming World Cup events at Nakiska Ski Area in Alberta province when he died. The nature of the incident in the Canadian Rockies wasn’t revealed.

“The federation, join the pain of his loved ones in these particularly difficult times,” the French skiing federation said in a statement.

Poisson won the bronze medal in the downhill skiing event in the 2013 world championships. He represented France twice in the Winter Olympics, coming in seventh place in 2010 and 16th place in 2014.

Fellow skiers nicknamed Poisson “Caillou,” which means “little stone,” due to his short, stocky frame, The Guardian reported.
